Is Your Job Site as Secure from Theft as It Could Be? Get Tips to Help Protect Your Supplies and Tools

It can feel impossible to truly protect your construction site. You do want to ensure that your tools, equipment, and other items aren’t stolen but you don’t have time to secure every piece of equipment every night. The good news is that there are a few relatively simple things you can do to make your job site safer from burglary. Read on to learn more and then visit Grove Hardware or call us at 909-544-4331 for more ideas.

The easier it is to identify your equipment the less likely it is to be stolen

If you make sure that your equipment is easily identifiable as yours, then thieves are less likely to steal it. Why? Because it’ll be harder to sell. For smaller job site tools and accessories, this could be as simple as labeling them, while larger equipment may require complex tracking devices. No matter how you do it, make sure the label can’t be easily removed and that it’s adhered to a part of the equipment that’s vital to its operation.

Record all serial numbers

You should have a comprehensive list of all pieces of equipment and their serial numbers. Of course, not every piece of equipment will have a serial number. In that case, record all the information you can. You may also choose to add photos to prove ownership, or to offer to the police if it is stolen. In short, the easier it is to identify yourself as the owner of a piece of equipment, the easier it will be to get back if it is stolen.

Keep an eye on theft trends

Several years ago, the cost of metal was through the roof. As a result, there were a lot of thefts that included electrical wiring, coils for air conditioners, catalytic convertors, etc. Backhoes are the most commonly stolen pieces of equipment, while northeastern states see more skid steers and tractors stolen. If you know the theft trends, then you’ll know what needs extra security.

Install night time lights or light sensors

If your job site is well lit, then it’s less likely to be robbed. Why? Because thieves want to travel under the cover of darkness where it’s harder for them to be seen. There are a number of ways you can add light to your job site, including night cameras, light sensors, or a light tower. You can also install fences and cameras to make the site even less likely to be robbed.
